HISTORICAL / NATURAL FEATURES:
The Bliss Woods region can be considered in three (3) parts.
1. The esker east of Bliss Road which is a special geological feature. It is a winding ridge of stratified gravel deposited by a sub-glacial river. The steep north and south facing slopes here hold two distinct, classic woodland habitats. The north slope has Sugar Maple and Basswood-Linden trees with a carpet of early spring ephemerals including Hepatica, Blood Root and Rue Anenome. On the south slopes an Oak-Hickory woods with a carpet of Dutchman's Britches, Solomon's Seal and Toothwort trails down to the flood plain of Blackberry Creek. An old ten acre farm field on the eastern edge is now returning to the wild.
2. At the south along Blackberry Creek are broad expanses of Sedge meadows which meet little drumlin-like hills holding five different species of oak and many fine prairie edge plants such as Pussy Toes, Spring Beauties, and Shining Bed Straw. Continuing north, we enter a rich woods of majestic trees towering above a carpet of Blue Eyed Mary, Wild Ginger, etc.
3. Crowning the diversity of this region is a large eighteen acre wetland basin on the north side of KeDeKa Road surrounded by a narrow band of woods which holds the County's only stand of nationally endangered Golden Seal. Also here is the rare Spikenard and an exquisite array of ferns from delicate Maiden Hair and Fragile Ferns to the fascinating Marsh Shield and Sensitive Ferns all mingling here in their balanced aboriginal setting.
(Note): Part 3 is a high priority acquisition joining Bliss Woods on the south and recently purchased Hannaford Woods on the northwest and is still privately owned by the Bauerle heirs.
Owners Thoughts in Designing Their Home
This Prestbury home was designed to take advantage of the natural landscape. Large, open windows provide a panorama of the ever changing landscape and seasons. Almost every window has an unobstructed view of the Prestbury woods.
They designed their home to give a feeling of welcome to any guest. Earth tones blend with the natural outdoor setting. The sunken family room has a cathedral beamed ceiling and windows on two sides. The fireplace is patterned after that of a favorite lodge.
The country kitchen has an adjacent eating area with wall to wall bay window, and is a favorite place to congregate.
The study is the owners retreat, a cozy room with wood paneling and raised wood moldings. The stone fireplace is flanked by bookcases.
The kitchen, family room and lower level recreation area have tongue in groove ceilings. The dining room has wood, wrought iron and crystal fixtures that are most unusual.
The exterior of the home is granite, cedar and brick, and the front porch, with granite walls and posts, lends a Colonial atmosphere.
