HISTORICAL / NATURAL FEATURES:
The Bliss Woods region can be considered in three (3) parts.
1. The esker east of Bliss Road which is a special geological feature. It is a winding ridge of stratified gravel deposited by a sub-glacial river. The steep north and south facing slopes here hold two distinct, classic woodland habitats. The north slope has Sugar Maple and Basswood-Linden trees with a carpet of early spring ephemerals including Hepatica, Blood Root and Rue Anenome. On the south slopes an Oak-Hickory woods with a carpet of Dutchman's Britches, Solomon's Seal and Toothwort trails down to the flood plain of Blackberry Creek. An old ten acre farm field on the eastern edge is now returning to the wild.
2. At the south along Blackberry Creek are broad expanses of Sedge meadows which meet little drumlin-like hills holding five different species of oak and many fine prairie edge plants such as Pussy Toes, Spring Beauties, and Shining Bed Straw. Continuing north, we enter a rich woods of majestic trees towering above a carpet of Blue Eyed Mary, Wild Ginger, etc.
3. Crowning the diversity of this region is a large eighteen acre wetland basin on the north side of KeDeKa Road surrounded by a narrow band of woods which holds the County's only stand of nationally endangered Golden Seal. Also here is the rare Spikenard and an exquisite array of ferns from delicate Maiden Hair and Fragile Ferns to the fascinating Marsh Shield and Sensitive Ferns all mingling here in their balanced aboriginal setting.
(Note): Part 3 is a high priority acquisition joining Bliss Woods on the south and recently purchased Hannaford Woods on the northwest and is still privately owned by the Bauerle heirs.

Owners Thoughts in Designing Their Home

This Prestbury home was designed to take advantage of the natural landscape. Large, open windows provide a panorama of the ever changing landscape and seasons. Almost every window has an unobstructed view of the Prestbury woods.

They designed their home to give a feeling of welcome to any guest. Earth tones blend with the natural outdoor setting. The sunken family room has a cathedral beamed ceiling and windows on two sides. The fireplace is patterned after that of a favorite lodge.

The country kitchen has an adjacent eating area with wall to wall bay window, and is a favorite place to congregate.

The study is the owners retreat, a cozy room with wood paneling and raised wood moldings. The stone fireplace is flanked by bookcases.

The kitchen, family room and lower level recreation area have tongue in groove ceilings. The dining room has wood, wrought iron and crystal fixtures that are most unusual.

The exterior of the home is granite, cedar and brick, and the front porch, with granite walls and posts, lends a Colonial atmosphere.

SELLER’S STORY

We purchased the lots because trees surrounded the land. The property behind the lots is dedicated as preserve which means that no homes may be built behind us. The area provided us with a sense of living in the country along with the benefits of neighbors, access to shopping and the toll way, which leads to major cities. Prestbury offers a variety of amenities very close to home; children were able to ride their bikes to the pool, golf course, tennis courts and most importantly, to their friend’s home. The friendships that my children made during their years in Prestbury have been life long as well as have mine. The schools in the area are excellent which provides a wonderful environment to raise children. My husband Ed Streit designed our home. We built our home with the idea of raising a large family and enjoyed many fulfilling years in Prestbury. We enjoyed the space we had in our home and our yard. Our home is very conducive for a large family as we raised five children there. The children loved it and we call it home for a very long time.

Some special features of our home are three wood burning fireplaces. The fireplace in the family room has granite stone and it reaches to the high ceiling. The fireplace in the study is quartz stone and is surrounded by built in bookcases on either side. The lower family room fireplace is traditional red brick. The entire basement is walkout with many large windows and plenty of storage and living space. Our entire kitchen and family room ceilings are all tongue and groove including the ceilings of the lower level family room. The use of wood through out the rooms lends to the beauty of the home. The exterior of the home was built with brick all the way around the first two floors of the home, rather than only face brick on the front of the home.

During the many years we lived in our home we never had any water in the basement, even though our neighbors had flooding. We never had a sump pump because we never needed one. This is just one example of the care in construction of a custom built home. In the last four years all of the carpeting in the home has been replaced except in the basement. Three years ago we completely re-landscaped the yard. Unilock stone was used to support the back of the driveway. In the front yard Unilock stone was used to terrace the levels where there once were railroad ties. A new brick walk in the front entry was built recently. This home is ready for some new memories.
